Art forms from Botswana Decorated Homes by Sandy Grant |
I have overtime become a big fan of watching and appreciating art, just watching it and i have become fond of the magnificent of it and this I suppose, is largely influenced by my working at the museum where I get to see art daily. But I wanna say this about art in Africa in general in particular why Africans in general do not come to exhibitions to come view their artistic skills. Why Africans don't come to exhibitions to appreciate art. The art of African artists, for instance, is one of the great traditions of naturalistic art in the world. The artists are masterful bronze/wood casters and produce some of the amazing portraits.Their depictions of life is real and graphically beautiful.Art here I should assume is seen as an artifact of culture, its part and parcel of life and so going to an exhibition is not necessary, not important.Recently thieves broke into my colleagues house who has been collecting art from the 70s and mind you he has a substantial precious collection in store.Receiving the news, he only thought of his precious collection, getting home, the only thing missing was his plasma screen and a few gadgets.Relating the story, he says his masterpiece which he intends to sell through ebay was left well intact and how relieved he was when he saw it?In another incident they used paintings as trays.
